Internal Alterations
The Brief
Design of a structural solution for the removal of two load-bearing walls in a residential property to create an open-plan ground floor layout. The existing walls supported first floor joists and a section of the roof structure.
The design involved installation of steel beams (RSJs) at ceiling level, with padstone bearings onto the remaining masonry. Temporary propping details were provided to the contractor to ensure safe construction sequence.
The structural calculations covered beam design, bearing pressure checks, and deflection limits. A clear set of drawings was produced showing beam positions, sizes, and connection details for contractor use.
