Structural
Members Design
Design of structural elements in steel, timber, masonry, and concrete.
What We Do
We design individual structural members and connections across all common construction materials. Whether it is a steel portal frame, a timber roof structure, a reinforced concrete beam, or a masonry panel, we provide calculations and detailing to current codes.
Our detailing is produced to a high standard, giving contractors clear and unambiguous information for fabrication and construction.
Scope of Service
Steel Design
Universal beams, columns, portal frames, base plates, and moment connections designed to BS EN 1993.
Timber Design
Roof trusses, rafters, purlins, floor joists, and glulam beams designed to BS EN 1995.
Concrete Design
Reinforced concrete beams, slabs, foundations, and retaining walls with reinforcement schedules to BS EN 1992.
Connection Detailing
Steel connection details, bearing details, and fixing specifications produced for contractor use.
How It Works
Initial Consultation
We discuss your project requirements, review architectural drawings, and establish the scope of structural work needed.
Site Assessment
Where required, we visit the site to assess existing conditions, take measurements, and identify any constraints that may affect the design.
Design & Calculations
We produce full structural calculations and drawings, ready for Building Control submission and contractor use.
Construction Support
We remain available throughout the build to answer site queries, review conditions, and provide amended details where needed.

Frequently Asked
Structural members design is the engineering process of sizing and detailing the individual elements that carry the loads in a building — steel beams and columns, timber rafters and joists, reinforced concrete slabs and beams, and masonry panels and lintels. Each element is checked for strength, deflection and stability to current Eurocodes so that the structure as a whole performs safely under both everyday and extreme loads.
Yes — this is one of the most common requests we receive. We assess the loads coming down through the wall above, check the bearings at each end, and size a steel beam (typically a UB or UC section) to carry those loads with acceptable deflection. We provide the beam specification, padstone details, and a clear drawing showing how it fits into the existing structure.
Yes. Every member design we issue includes the connection and bearing details the contractor needs to actually build the work — bolt sizes, weld lengths, padstone dimensions, fixings and bearings. Clear, unambiguous detailing is what separates a useful structural design from one that causes confusion on site.
We design in all the materials commonly used in UK residential and small commercial construction: structural steel (BS EN 1993), timber including glulam and engineered joists (BS EN 1995), reinforced concrete (BS EN 1992), and masonry (BS EN 1996). We can also advise on the most cost-effective material choice for your particular project.
